Cycling Accident Claims – Bike Week 2025

John here again.

Cycling Accident Claims

The summer cycling season is with us again and this week is Bike Week 2025. Have fun out there and check out this  https://www.cyclinguk.org/bikeweek

However, the sad truth is that cyclists are some of the most vulnerable people on the roads. An obvious point is that they are more likely to suffer serious injuries than a driver of a vehicle in a collision. Unfortunately, with the ever increasing popularity of cycling, we have also seen in our business an increase in the number of cyclists getting seriously injured on the roads and making Cycling Accident Claims.

If you are a cyclist and you ever do find yourself involved in a road traffic collision, Cycling UK have created a good guide for what you should do at the scene, if you are able:  https://www.cyclinguk.org/cyclingcrashadvice.

I also have prepared some top tips: https://www.ibbotsonbrady.co.uk/johns-top-tips/.

There are many ways cyclists can be injured on the roads. The most common causes that we have seen are drivers passing too closely, drivers not paying sufficient attention and not seeing cyclists, drivers pulling out in front of cyclists, and cyclists hitting potholes causing them to fall.

It is pretty rare that the cyclists themselves are at fault in such circumstances, yet they often suffer with the most serious and complex injuries, even when the impact was at low speed. They are often left with psychological injuries, as well as physical injuries too.

It can be difficult to know what to do after suffering a serious injury, and how to make a claim. Some people wait until after they are well on with their recovery to consider bringing a claim, but we can often help sooner by getting clients access to extra rehabilitation support and medical treatment to assist with recovery. We can also help to claim compensation for loss of earnings, pain and suffering, damaged bicycles and clothing, and many more aspects of loss. We are talking about all aspects of Cycling Accident Claims.

More details about how the claims process works can be seen in my previous blog post here: https://www.ibbotsonbrady.co.uk/bike-accident-claim-procedure/

It is usually still possible to make a claim even if the driver at fault is uninsured or unidentified. We have even conducted some successful claims involving e-bike or e-scooter riders that have knocked over cyclists and caused injury. The Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) deals with these sorts of claims. They are an organisation that is centrally funded, effectively with a proportion of every lawfully insured driver’s premium that they pay.

Cyclists are entitled to make a personal injury claim if the accident was entirely, or even just partially, somebody else’s fault. If you are unsure about who is at fault, the best thing to do is speak to an experienced solicitor, like me or one of my colleagues, for advice. A free chat will help you learn a lot more.

Ibbotson Brady Solicitors are specialist personal injury solicitors based in Leeds, and we have well over 20 years of experience in dealing with cycling injury claims. We have helped a great many cyclists based in Yorkshire and beyond to secure compensation so that they can recover from their injuries and move on with their lives.
